The particular detail here is the road itself: a well-kept stretch of the carretera Sánchez, the highway linking Santo Domingo, then called the Capital, with San Cristóbal, a town west of it. The Dominican Republic was under United States military occupation from 1916 to 1924, and during those years American engineers and the occupation government put real effort into building and repairing roads, partly to move goods and troops and partly to tie the interior to the coast. A photograph of a smooth, maintained highway from that period records both the new infrastructure and the foreign administration that paid for it.
