From the air, this view of Santo Domingo presents the capital as the country's promoters wanted it seen in 1946, with its streets and districts laid out for the camera. The city had been named Ciudad Trujillo since 1936, after the dictator Rafael Trujillo, and the print was issued by the Dominican Information Center in New York as part of a wider effort to promote the nation abroad. Santo Domingo was founded in 1498 and is the oldest continuously inhabited European settlement in the Americas, so it is worth looking for the contrast between its older colonial core and the newer construction spreading beyond it.
