Three girls pose together in this half-plate daguerreotype, made around 1860 and attributed to the Boston studio of Southworth & Hawes. The sitters include Mabel Hubbard, who later married Alexander Graham Bell, along with her sister Gertrude Mercer Hubbard and Roberta Wolcott Hubbard Bell, whose name is sometimes recorded as Grace. By this time the daguerreotype was giving way to paper prints, and this plate has been cut down to fit its plain leather case with a push-button closure. The image forms part of the Gilbert H. Grosvenor collection of Bell family photographs at the Library of Congress.
