Gertrude Mercer McCurdy Hubbard poses with her baby daughter, Mabel Gardiner Hubbard, in this hand-colored sixth-plate daguerreotype. Mabel grew up to marry Alexander Graham Bell, and her father, Gardiner Greene Hubbard, a Boston lawyer, later backed Bell's telephone work. The plate dates to about 1858 and was cut down to fit its small leather push-button case. The photographer is unidentified, but the tinting that adds color to cheeks and clothing was a common finishing touch on portraits of the period.
