A quarter-plate daguerreotype from 1846 shows a family of three: Henry Joseph Adams, his wife Abigail Ridley Gibson Adams, and their baby daughter, Anna Gibson Adams, who was born in 1845. Keeping an infant still through the long exposures of the 1840s was difficult, which makes this group portrait unusual for its time. The photographer is unidentified, but the plate's hallmark and the style of its case are cataloged by collectors, which helps place it among mid-century American makers. The plate belongs to the John Adams Kingsbury Papers and entered the Library of Congress in 1972.
