A Cleveland shoe store provides the setting for this c1938 halftone, made to showcase Toncan iron enameling sheets from the Republic Steel Corporation, a company based in Cleveland. Porcelain enamel, a glassy coating fused onto metal at high heat, was promoted in the 1930s for storefronts and building exteriors because it resisted weather and stayed bright and easy to clean. Pictures like this one served manufacturer advertising, presenting enameled panels as a modern way to refresh street-level facades during the decade's commercial remodeling.
