Anshan, in Liaoning Province in northeastern China, was the center of the country's largest iron and steel complex, and the Anshan Iron and Steel Company (An-shan kang t'ieh kung ssu in the older romanization) is the producer named in this print's record. The subject is finished steel structural material, the rolled beams, angles, and sections used to frame buildings, bridges, and factories. Its 1954 date falls in the early years of the People's Republic of China, when the government was rebuilding heavy industry with Soviet technical help and placing steel production at the center of its first five-year plan. The color photomechanical process used here was a common way of reproducing images for official and propaganda publications of the period.
