The steel forms shown here were molds for the monoliths, the large blocks of reinforced concrete poured in sections to build the Gatun Locks on the Panama Canal. Engineers used the locks, completed in 1913, to lift ships about 85 feet from the Caribbean side up to the level of Gatun Lake, which was created by damming the Chagres River. The forms were reused as each section was poured, so they show how the work proceeded in stages. The print is catalogued as No. 28 and credited to a photographer identified only as Marine, working in Panama.
