Few places in turn-of-the-century America were as tied to heavy industry as Homestead, Pennsylvania, where the Carnegie Steel Company's mill stood on the Monongahela River. This stereograph, made around 1907, records a row of smokestacks that gave the works its characteristic skyline, and railroad locomotives also appear among its subjects. The town had been the site of the bitter 1892 strike and lockout, which brought it national attention. Stereo cards like this one were meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, so the paired images would have conveyed the depth and bulk of the mill to viewers at home.
