Robert Fulton, the engineer behind the steamboat Clermont, appears here in an engraving by G. Parker after a painting by Benjamin West, whose plate credit gives his title as P.R.A., President of the Royal Academy. Fulton's Clermont made its run up the Hudson River in 1807, a voyage that helped show that steam navigation could work commercially. The print dates from decades after Fulton's death in 1815, when he was remembered largely as an inventor. Note how the engraver turns West's painted surfaces into lines and tone, the usual way such portraits reached a wide public.
