Henry Clay, the Kentucky statesman, is the subject of this lithograph, which was published in New York around 1844 by George Endicott. It was copied from a daguerreotype portrait made in April 1844 by the firm of Anthony and Edward, so it reflects an early photographic source being turned into a printed likeness. Clay was a leading Whig and a perennial candidate for president, and 1844 was the year he ran for the office and lost to James K. Polk. Prints like this circulated widely during the campaign, which is what makes the image worth a closer look.
