Four of the best-known financiers of the Gilded Age appear together in this color lithograph, which ran in *Puck* on February 7, 1883. Cyrus W. Field, Jay Gould, Cornelius Vanderbilt, and Russell Sage were all tied to railroads, telegraphs, or large fortunes, and the ironic title, "The protectors of our industries," points to the magazine's skepticism about men who claimed to guard the public's economic interests. Cartoonist Bernhard Gillam worked for *Puck* during the 1880s, when the press often portrayed such men as symbols of concentrated wealth and its effect on ordinary workers.
