What sets this poster apart is its pairing of an environmental slogan with a painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, whose soft, billowing clouds fill the sheet behind the text. O'Keeffe is best known for her desert landscapes and close-up flowers, but in the 1960s she began painting clouds she had seen from airplane windows during her travels. The poster dates to about 1971, in the years after the first Earth Day in 1970, when air pollution and industrial emissions were drawing wide public concern. Its Olivetti credit, from the Italian office-machine company that sponsored the project, shows that businesses of the period also took up conservation themes in their advertising.
