Carrying the slogan "It's worth while! That's why," this 1917 color lithograph by G.P. Beadle urges ordinary Britons to buy war savings certificates. The National War Savings Committee issued it in London as part of a campaign to draw small, everyday savings into government borrowing during the First World War, when the state needed money on a scale no earlier conflict had required. The poster's appeal is aimed at working-class households, the group the committee most wanted to reach with modest, regular purchases. Its plain, direct wording reflects the wartime effort to make thrift look like a patriotic duty.
