Few wartime posters pair a tank with a savings appeal as directly as this Edinburgh lithograph, which promises bonds from £5 to £5,000 and certificates at 15 shillings sixpence. The Scottish War Savings Committee issued it in 1918, when Britain financed its war effort partly through public borrowing, and the tank was a fresh, eye-catching symbol of the new armored weapon. The printer, McLagan & Cumming of Edinburgh, was a established Scottish firm, and the poster's color and bold lettering show how wartime appeals were designed to be read quickly from a street wall.
