This color lithograph from 1915 sets a war savings appeal against the everyday habit of smoking, a link its subject headings make explicit. Its caption, "Now is the time to buy something worth having," asks ordinary Britons to put money they might spend on tobacco into government savings instead. Bert Thomas, a British cartoonist and illustrator, designed it for Roberts & Leete, a London printer. Posters like this were part of a wider effort to fund the First World War from small private savers, not only from large loans and taxes.
