Bert Thomas's 1915 color lithograph, catalogued as poster number 64, makes a direct appeal to civilians with the slogan "You buy war bonds. We do the rest!" The message divides the war effort in two: money raised at home and the fighting done by soldiers abroad. Britain financed the war through borrowing as well as taxation, and posters like this one asked ordinary people to lend their savings to the government in exchange for interest. Its subject is as much the economics of the war as the men who fought it.
