Titled simply "Peon couple," this portrait identifies its subjects by social rank rather than by name. "Peon" referred to a rural laborer, often bound to a landowner's estate by debts that were hard to repay, a system that shaped country life across Mexico in the late 1800s. The print carries the copyright line of C.B. Waite, a photographer working in Mexico City, and it reached the Library of Congress through the Frank and Frances Carpenter Collection, gathered by a couple who used such images in their travel writing and lectures.
