Catalogued among six mounted prints of Hilton Head, South Carolina, this view is tagged under the island's piers and wharves and the Union supply operations that worked them. Union forces seized Hilton Head in November 1861 after the Battle of Port Royal, and the island soon became a major staging base for Union operations along the South Carolina coast, where ships unloaded troops, animals, and stores. The photographs date to 1862, though they were printed later, so they record the base during its busiest years. The collection's subject headings also list "military exchanges," a reminder of the steady traffic of goods and men moving through the harbor.
