Promising free homes, government lands and cheap deeded land, this c1890 print is a direct piece of Dakota land promotion. It dates from just after South Dakota became a state in 1889, when railroads, land agents and boosters competed to draw settlers onto the northern Plains. Under the Homestead Act of 1862, a settler could claim up to 160 acres after living on and improving the land for five years, and that offer was a powerful draw. The record also lists the name Forbes from a shelflist card, though that attribution is unverified.
