Titled *Dakota Flats*, this c1903 print points to one of the apartment buildings that changed how New Yorkers lived at the turn of the century. The name recalls the Dakota, the apartment house on Central Park West at 72nd Street that opened in 1884 and was among the city's first large luxury apartment buildings. The print was made by A. Loeffler of Tompkinsville, on Staten Island, and registered for copyright, a step photographers took to protect their views. Its place among 1900-1910 photographs of city apartment houses shows how this new kind of housing had become a common subject for urban photographers.
