Its title sets the quarrel out plainly as "inflammatory arguments for and against the test laws," a pairing that shows how sharply the question divided opinion. G.M. Woodward drew it, and William Holland published it in London in 1790. The Test and Corporation Acts required officeholders to take Anglican communion, which kept Protestant dissenters such as Presbyterians and Baptists out of many public posts. Repeal campaigns met fierce resistance from clergy and church defenders, and in 1790 Parliament rejected repeal, so prints like this one capture a heated debate over church and state.
