A young African American boy leans against a large tree in Georgia, the trunk giving him a steady place to rest. The photograph comes from an album compiled by W.E.B. Du Bois, then a sociologist at Atlanta University, who assembled images of Black life in Georgia for the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris. Du Bois used such pictures to counter the demeaning caricatures common in American popular imagery and to present Black Georgians as ordinary, dignified people. Dated 1899 or 1900, this print is a small but revealing part of that effort.
