Marchers moving through downtown Birmingham on May 7, 1963, were part of the wave of demonstrations that made the city the center of the civil rights struggle that spring. Organizers from the Southern Christian Leadership Conference and the Alabama Christian Movement for Human Rights had launched a campaign against segregated lunch counters, stores, and public facilities, and young people were joining the marches in large numbers. City officials, under Commissioner Eugene "Bull" Connor, responded with police, dogs, and fire hoses, and images like this one helped carry the confrontation to national audiences.
