Nauvoo, on the Illinois bank of the Mississippi, was the city the Latter-day Saints built after being driven from Missouri in the 1839 to 1846 period, and by 1854 it had been largely emptied, since most of the Mormon population had left under Brigham Young for the Great Basin. This wood engraving, published in Gleason's Pictorial in July 1854, shows the town as seen from the river, looking down its waterfront. Gleason's was a Boston illustrated weekly that relied on engravings like this one to bring distant places to readers, so the view reflects an outside observer's interest in a city that had already become famous for its troubled history.
