Measuring just 9 by 18 centimeters, this small drawing is a quick, compact study of a French river, built from graphite and watercolor with white highlights added to lift the light on the water. The artist is known only by the initials "Th. R.", and the date range, roughly 1835 to 1867, is an estimate. Landscape sketches like this were often made on the spot and then kept as studies, and the technique of heightening with white was a common way for artists of the period to suggest sunlight on water and wet stone. The drawing comes from the George Lothrop Bradley Collection, which preserves many such working sketches.
