A lookout posted high on the mast in a crow's nest is the detail that sets this hand-colored lithograph apart from the many river views the firm produced. Such platforms gave sailors a wide view for spotting shoals, other vessels, and shifting weather, and the Hudson, busy with sloops, barges, and steamboats, offered plenty to watch for. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that issued the print, sold colored lithographs of American scenery to a broad middle-class market from the 1850s into the early twentieth century. The publication range given here, 1856 to 1907, reflects how long the firm's plates and popular subjects stayed in circulation.
