Salmon was central to life along the Trinity River, and this view shows a fish weir built across its current by the Hupa people of the valley. Weirs like this one directed migrating fish toward traps or nets, and the salmon catch supplied food and anchored ceremonial life for the Hupa and neighboring peoples. Edward S. Curtis made the picture in 1923 for his multivolume work *The North American Indian*, where it appeared as plate 459 in the supplemental volume 13. Curtis often arranged his scenes, so the image is best read as both a record of a working fishery and a composed view made for publication.
