Few pictures of the French conquest of Algeria come from an artist as known for Napoleonic subjects as Auguste Raffet, and this lithograph depicts a clash at Oued-el-Alleug on 31 December 1839, on the Mitidja plain southwest of Algiers. The fighting was part of the long campaign France waged after 1830 to take control of the region, pitting French troops against forces loyal to the Algerian leader Abd al-Qadir. Raffet signed and dated the design directly on the stone, and the print was issued in 1840 by the Paris publishers Ginaut frères, with the printing credited to Auguste Bry.
