Two horses reach the line so evenly matched that the title, "Head and head at the winning post," says it all: only a head separates them as they cross the finish. Currier & Ives, the New York firm that sold colored lithographs to a broad American public, produced many racing scenes like this in the 1880s, when horse racing drew large crowds to tracks across the country. Chromolithographs such as this were built from a series of stones, each inked in a different color, so the bright hues and sharp action came from careful multistep printing. The firm's catalog raisonné lists the print as no. 2990.
