Sam Lopez, a Tolowa man who lived from 1886 to 1977, wears a dance head-dress in this c1923 portrait by Edward S. Curtis. The Tolowa have lived along the Smith River and the northern California and southern Oregon coast for generations, and ceremonial regalia like this was part of their dances and gatherings. Curtis made the picture for *The North American Indian*, his multi-volume survey published from 1907 to 1930, where it appeared in the supplement volume as plate 455. Curtis often posed and arranged his sitters, so the image records the regalia and the presentation as much as everyday life.
