The Yaqui dancers pictured here are shown in the ceremonial dress tied to their religious life, a tradition that has long been central to the Yaqui people of northwestern Mexico and the southwestern United States. Yaqui ceremonial dance, including the Pascola and Deer Dancer traditions, combines music, costume and devotion to Catholic feast days and to older beliefs about the natural world. The record dates the print only loosely, to somewhere between 1900 and 1930, a period when outsiders often photographed Indigenous ceremonies as curiosities, so the image is valuable both for its record of dress and for the ritual life it documents.
