Blashfield's dome painting, *The Evolution of Civilization*, fills the ceiling of the Rotunda in the Thomas Jefferson Building of the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C. The mural presents the progress of human culture as a series of allegorical figures arranged beneath the dome, a fitting theme for a building meant to house the nation's knowledge. Blashfield was a leading muralist of the Gilded Age, and his work in the Jefferson Building reflects the era's taste for classical allegory and its faith in learning as a civilizing force. This photographic print records the design as it appeared around the building's opening, when the Rotunda was among the most ambitious decorative schemes in the country.
