This photographic print reproduces the decorative scheme on the dome of the rotunda, where Edwin Howland Blashfield's allegory of the evolution of civilization was installed in the Library of Congress's Thomas Jefferson Building in the mid-1890s. Blashfield, a leading American muralist of the Gilded Age, arranged the figures to trace human progress from early societies toward a modern, learned civilization, a theme that suited a national library. The record notes that Blashfield held the copyright, which suggests the image was issued as a reproduction of his design. Such photographs let viewers study the composition at a distance from the dome itself.
