Kennington Gate, the turnpike on the old Epsom road where traffic from the races funneled back into London, is the setting here. Epsom's races, especially the Derby run on the Surrey Downs, drew Londoners of every rank by carriage, cart, horseback, and on foot, and the homeward crush at the gate was a familiar sight in the 1830s. The drawing, dated about 1838 and noted as engraved, belongs to a set of similar scenes of the Epsom road, and its tangle of vehicles and onlookers shows the congestion the series was meant to capture.
