A mosque dome in Isfahan, Iran, is the subject of this color slide from August 1952, part of the Warne collection. Isfahan served as the capital of the Safavid dynasty under Shah Abbas I in the late 1500s and early 1600s, a period that produced many of the city's mosques and their glazed tile work. Domes in the city are often covered in patterned blue and turquoise tiles, a craft that made Isfahan famous across the Islamic world. Mid-century slides like this one record the city's architecture as it stood before much of its modern development.
