The mosque in this view stands over the Cave of Machpelah in Hebron, the traditional burial place of Abraham, Sarah, Isaac, Rebecca, Jacob, and Leah, and the site is still sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims. Francis Frith, a British photographer, made the negative during his travels in Egypt and the Levant in the late 1850s, and the print was later issued as plate 9 in his book *Sinai and Palestine*, published in London around 1862. Because non-Muslims were largely barred from entering the sanctuary in this period, outside views like this one were often the closest Western audiences could come to the building. The massive ancient masonry at its base is worth noticing, since it reflects the older construction the later mosque was built upon.
