Nablus, the site of ancient Shechem, is the subject here, pictured as a town set against the hills of the central West Bank. The print is an albumen photograph made by Francis Frith, the English photographer who traveled through Egypt, Sinai and the Levant in the 1850s, and it appeared as plate 27 in his book "Sinai and Palestine," published in London around 1862. Frith's Holy Land views were prized by Victorian readers who knew the region through scripture, and Shechem itself is a biblical city mentioned in the books of Genesis and Joshua. Look for how the built-up town sits in the valley between Mount Gerizim and Mount Ebal, a landscape that shaped its history.
