Known as Samson's gate, this view of a gateway in Gaza takes its name from Judges 16, where Samson carries away the city's gates on his shoulders. Francis Frith made the photograph during his travels in Egypt and Palestine in the late 1850s. It appeared as plate 11 in *Sinai and Palestine*, published in London by William Mackenzie around 1862, and this albumen print was made from a glass negative. The stonework and the worn approach show the age of a place that had been a fortified town for centuries.
