Four seated colossi of Ramesses II and the standing Osiris figures that flank the doorway dominate this view of the Great Temple at Abu Simbel, in Nubia. Francis Frith made the photograph on his Egyptian travels in the late 1850s, and it appeared as plate 32 in *Upper Egypt and Ethiopia*, published in London around 1862. The temple was cut into a sandstone cliff around 1260 BCE, then lost under sand for centuries until European travelers rediscovered it in 1813. Frith's view makes the scale of the facade easy to grasp.
