Butte City, a mining settlement in Butte County in northern California, is the place this drawing records. Dated to about 1854, the sheet was made with watercolor, ink brush, and opaque white over a faint graphite underdrawing, a careful method suited to recording a town's layout and details. Camps like Butte City sprang up quickly after gold was discovered in California in 1848, and images of them show how miners and merchants crowded into the gulches and river flats. It is a useful record of how fast the gold rush reshaped the state's interior.
