Washington Street in Sonora, the seat of Tuolumne County, is photographed here from the City Hotel, which gives the viewer a look down the main thoroughfare of a gold rush town. Sonora grew quickly after miners reached the Sierra Nevada foothills in the late 1840s, and by the 1860s its streets were lined with stores, hotels and saloons. This print is one half of a stereographic pair issued in the *Gems of California Scenery* series, and the Library holds only this half, so the companion view is not in the collection. Stereographs like this were viewed through a hand-held stereoscope and were popular parlor items in the years after the Civil War.
