Its title places this farm one mile from Washington City Hall, a reminder of how close working countryside still lay to the center of the capital in the late 1830s. Beyond the planned avenues and the few built blocks, the District of Columbia remained largely fields, woodlots and scattered farmsteads, and this drawing captures that edge where the city gave way to the land around it. Wash drawings of the period, built up in tones of ink or watercolor rather than fine line, were often used to record buildings with a plain, documentary care. The farmhouse and its outbuildings are worth studying as a glimpse of ordinary rural life just beyond the city's core.
