The record places this engraving on the floor of the House of Representatives in Washington on December 3, 1860, the day Congress reconvened for its session in the midst of the secession crisis that followed Abraham Lincoln's election. It appeared in Harper's Weekly on December 15, 1860, a New York illustrated newspaper that relied on wood engravings to give readers views of national events they could not see firsthand. Worth noticing is the crowded chamber itself: members, galleries, and onlookers were gathered at a moment when the Union was visibly fracturing, and the image records the room as it looked at that tense opening of the session.
