Federal Hall in New York City, the building where George Washington took the presidential oath on April 30, 1789, is the subject of this view. The image is a photograph of an 1790 copper engraving, drawn by Peter Lacour and engraved by Amos Doolittle, who printed and sold it from New Haven, Connecticut. At the time, the building was the meeting place of the first Congress under the new Constitution, and the federal government moved to Philadelphia in 1790. The engraving records a civic landmark at a brief but important moment in the young republic's history.
