A boy on horseback at Fort Huachuca, the U.S. Army post in southeastern Arizona, is the subject of this 1892 photograph, which the record identifies as Frederick Hall Fowler, later a civil engineer who died in 1946. The picture was taken by Albert Kenrick Fisher, a naturalist and government biologist who made photographs as well as scientific observations. The post had been home to Black cavalry units, including the 10th Cavalry, since the mid-1880s, so the scene offers a glimpse of everyday life on a frontier garrison. The print was made after the original exposure, a detail worth keeping in mind when judging its tones.
