The Masonic hall in Bodie stands as a reminder of the lodge life that once anchored this Mono County mining town. Bodie grew rapidly after gold was found in the 1870s, and its fraternal organizations, including the Masons, met regularly while the mines employed thousands. By the years between 1900 and 1930, when this photograph was taken, the town had declined sharply as the ore played out and residents moved away. The building's survival in that setting shows how quickly a frontier community's public life could fade.
