Set in open desert country, this photograph shows a Cahuilla house in southern California, made around 1924 and published as plate 520 in the supplement to Edward S. Curtis's *The North American Indian*. Traditional Cahuilla shelters were built from poles and covered with brush, thatch, or woven mats, materials that gave shade in the heat and could be rebuilt as families moved with the seasons. Curtis spent decades documenting Native communities across the West, and his pictures of dwellings like this one preserve a building tradition that was changing quickly in the early 1920s.
