Walt Whitman's modest frame house on Mickle Street in Camden, New Jersey, is the setting here, and it was the last home of the poet who wrote *Leaves of Grass*. Whitman moved into the house in 1884, after a stroke had left him partly disabled, and he died there in March 1892. Visitors such as younger writers and admirers came to the door in his final years, and the house became a place of pilgrimage for his readers. The Feinberg-Whitman Collection, assembled by the collector Charles Feinberg, preserves many images like this one, documenting the places where Whitman lived and worked.
