Walt Whitman spent the last years of his life in a modest house on Mickle Street in Camden, New Jersey, where he lived from 1884 until his death in 1892. Marsden Hartley painted the house in 1908, and this photoprint reproduces that painting, with Arnold Genthe's signature on the back. Genthe was best known for his portraits and street photographs, so his hand in reproducing a painting of a poet's home is worth noting. The image comes from the Feinberg-Whitman Collection, which gathered Whitman materials and documents how the poet was remembered in the decades after his death.
